Social Security Number Theft

Like financial identity theft,  social security number theft is one of the most commonly  thought of  identity thefts, especially when we know it is the doorway to all the other types of identity theft.

  1. Do Not Carry your social security card in you wallet.  You rarely need to use it as a form of identification; so do not carry it around with you on a regular basis.
  2. Do Not give out your social security number to anyone unless you are absolutely sure you know who you are dealing with and understand why you need to give it to somebody.  Go as far as to challenge them why.
  3. Make sure your social security number is being used in a safe manner by all who may have it on file; employers, governmental and tax authorities, accountants, doctors, schools, financial institutions, insurance carriers, insurance agents, brokers, and rest.  We know the list is exhausting.

A little commercial for BTR-Security – we help these organizations keep your sensitive information safe, if you are in doubt, give us a call and we will contact whoever you have concerns with, as to what your concern may be, and perhaps save you and the others they have on file from a data or physical records breach.

If you feel your social security number has been fraudulently used, please follow the instructions located on Recovering ID pages of this website.
